8th Grade Goals & Objectives

 

Select two goals and then two objectives for each goal.   

 

Once you have selected your goals and objectives send your choices to Mrs. Davis via email.

 

Goal 1:  Reasoning skills- (for students wishing to develop skills in math or science):

In 4 out of 5 opportunities, the gifted learner will demonstrate concrete and abstract reasoning skills during problem solving activities.

 

  Objectives:

  • The student will be able to identify the problem to be solved in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will generate possible problem solving strategies to use in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will evaluate multiple problem solving strategies to use in 4 out of 5 situations.

 

Goal 2: Real life problem solving – (for students wishing to develop skills in math or science)

Using problem solving skills in 4 out of 5 activities when presented with real life scenario(s), the gifted learner will provide solution(s) and possible consequence(s).

 

  Objectives:

  • The student will apply decision making skills in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will create a plan to solve the problem in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will predict possible consequences to the solution in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will evaluate possible consequences to a solution in 4 out of 5 situations.

 

Goal 3:  Critical and creative thinking-(for students wishing to develop skills in language arts)

In 4 out of 5 activities, the gifted learner will demonstrate fluent and flexible thinking by generating ideas/responses/solutions or questions to a given prompt/scenario.

 

   Objectives:

  • The student will generate multiple ideas within a given time frame in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will classify ideas in multiple categories in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will be able to justify relevance of ideas to a given topic in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will expand and elaborate on ideas/ information in 4 out of 5 situations.

                                                                                                                                                             

Goal 4: Writing, oral communication

The gifted student will express him/herself in creative ways through the use of elaboration, originality, and novel approaches in a minimum of 1 product/performance each grading period.

 

   Objectives:

  • The student will use expressive language and rich vocabulary in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will expand or modify an idea by adding detail in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will use novel, unique or unusual responses in 4 out of 5 situations.

 

Goal 5: Creative and higher order thinking (for students wishing to develop skills in science or math)

The gifted student will utilize creative and higher order critical thinking to identify and solve a minimum of 4 out of 5 real world problems.

    Objectives:

  • The student will demonstrate fluent thinking by generating solutions and supportive arguments in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will analyze the reliability of data in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will transfer learning from one situation to another in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will draw conclusions and forecast effective solutions to the problem in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will use and evaluate various problem solving methods in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will synthesize alternatives to create original solutions in 4 out of 5 situations.

 

Goal 6: Leadership

The gifted learner will be able to identify/demonstrate leadership characteristics/ skills and participatory roles in gifted/heterogeneous groups in 4 out of 5 trials.

 

   Objectives:

  • The student will listen and acknowledge divergent views to positively affect change in 4 out of 5 trials.

  • The student will demonstrate leadership skills by organizing groups to achieve project goals in 4 out of 5 trials.

  • The student will demonstrate self-awareness by reflecting on his individual performance within the group in 4 out of 5 trials.  

  • The student will demonstrate the use of problem solving skills and reasoning to handle a variety of social situations with adults and peers in 4 out of 5 trials.

  • The student will implement conflict management and resolution techniques to bring about positive change in 4 out of 5 trials.

  • The student will identify personal strengths and weaknesses that influence positive group dynamics in 4 out of 5 trials.

 

 

Goal 7 : Time management, independence, responsibility

The gifted student will demonstrate independence and self-directed learning by assuming responsibility for time management, materials and other resources in order to complete 80% of all assignments/projects each grading period on time.

 

   Objectives:

  • The student will complete and turn in homework assignments on time and as directed in 8 out of 10 opportunities.

  • The student will complete and turn in classroom assignments on time and as directed in 8 out of 10 opportunities.

  • The student will demonstrate persistence in task completion (classwork, homework, projects) in 8 out of 10 opportunities.

  • The student will construct and apply plans and strategies to guide and complete an independent project/assignment with 80% accuracy.

  • The student will acknowledge frustration and identify and use strategies to persevere to complete the task in 4 out of 5 opportunities.

  • The student will accept challenges in areas of strengths and weaknesses in 4 out of 5 opportunities.

  • The student will assume primary responsibility for learning in 8 out of 10 situations.

               

Goal 8: Creation & presentation of products; technology (for students wishing to develop interdisciplinary skills)

The gifted learner will develop and deliver a variety of products/performances that demonstrate understanding in multiple fields/discipline in 4 out of 5 trials.

 

   Objectives:

  • The student will develop products that communicate expertise in multiple fields to a variety of audiences in 4 out of 5 situations.

  • The student will create products/performances that synthesize information from multiple sources in 4 out of 5 situations.
